Our History
Humboldt Mortgage Company has been providing all types of quality financing with competitive prices since 1964.
Purchase money and refinance money loans, first-time home buyers, low down payment, no down payment, rehab, investment, 1-4 units, apartments, SBA, reverse, commercial, no income qualification, private financing, bank statement and Conventional, FHA, VA, USDA and CalHFA financing.
Humboldt Mortgage Company started in Eureka, CA in 1964 at the same location it now resides, currently the Hospital District. We were started by a group of local businesspeople who wanted to bring quality financing to this great community. One of those people was William “Bill” Greenwood, who eventually bought out his partners. Bill ran the business for years, along with Greenwood Realty.
In 1985, Robert J. Lawton came aboard as Manager and Mortgage Loan Originator/Processor after working locally for two years as a Mortgage Broker. Coming from a building background, he knew the challenges of obtaining financing. Upon Bill’s demise, Bob bought the business in 1996 and continued to provide quality financing.
In 2019, Fatima Naylor came to assist at Humboldt Mortgage after 23 years of working at a title company, eventually becoming a highly competent Escrow Officer. She obtained her CalDRE license in 2021 and became Manager and sole Mortgage Loan Originator in May of 2023.
In June of 2023, Maxwell Despard came aboard as Administrative Assistant. His past seven years providing operational and administrative support for a local non-profit enables him to help Humboldt Mortgage develop new systems and run the office to a tee. His calmness in helping clients with loan set-up gets the job done.
In October of 2024, after many years of working with our staff while under the employ of lender partners, Nate Sommer Lux joined the Humboldt Mortgage team as a Loan Operations Manager.

Fatima Naylor
Manager/Mortgage Loan Originator
I was born and raised in Humboldt County. I graduated Humboldt State University with a degree in Psychology with a minor in Criminology in 2004. I worked for a local title company for 23 years and from that experience I was able to make numerous friends and contacts in the real estate field. Moving to Humboldt Mortgage Company felt natural to me as I am driven by customer service and helping others with such a momentous financial occasion. In my spare time, I enjoy reading and staying active with Pilates. I currently reside in Eureka with my husband and two amazing boys.

Nate Sommer Lux
Loan Operations Manager
I got my start in the residential mortgage business in the early 2000’s. Originally from the Midwest, my wife and I moved to Northern California in 2004 where we lived for 12 years. I’ve worked with a number of California mortgage companies and lenders, including with Bob and Fatima with Humboldt Mortgage in several capacities. My experience includes all aspects of the mortgage process, most recently as a senior underwriter and operations lead. I couldn’t be happier to join the team at HMC and bring my knowledge of products and guidelines, adding value and expertise to their client experience. When I’m not glued to my monitors I enjoy mountain biking, rollerblading, and spending time with my wife and son – preferably in a kayak on one of the many lakes near where I live.
Maxwell Despard
Administrative Assistant
I grew up in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, starting my career in construction. Good friends and a nicer climate brought me to Humboldt in 2014. I joined the nonprofit sector in an operational and administrative capacity, supporting housing, weatherization, environmental restoration, and direct services programs. Now I provide these same services to our clients and the rest of the Humboldt Mortgage team. I enjoy making the home-buying process less intimidating. Outside of work, I stay busy with houseplants, gardening, live music, fixing various things, and taking in the county’s gorgeous landscapes.
Robert J Lawton
Owner/Real Estate Broker
I was born in Redwood City, CA, where my parents had a home for 55 years. Growing up with three brothers and camping in Lassen, Yosemite, Yellowstone, and Mexico allowed a character-building experience. Our annual family travels included driving 24 hours a day to visit relatives in Upstate New York where my parents were born, living in a tent for three months behind my Grandmother DeMarco’s home, swimming in quarries, and venturing seven miles to Lawton Road, where my Grandparents cultivated 180 acres of wheat and soybeans. It was truly a Huck Finn upbringing. In 1969, I came to Humboldt County with my girlfriend and her two children to escape the crowds, eventually going to college locally. I enjoyed swimming in the local six rivers and backpacking in the local mountains.
I have been with Humboldt Mortgage since 1985, bringing my community involvement from past roles as a General Building Contractor and Developer. Over the years, I've served as a board member for various low-income housing boards, I host a decades-long weekly poker game and love to go dancing around this wonderful and beautiful county. In addition to my local connections, I lease a home in a small village in Mexico with no cars, accessible only by boat, where for 25 years I have participated in an annual four-day Valentine’s Day Croquet Tournament. I get to walk everywhere and dance a lot! Good to be alive.
